DAY 02
Labelling, stock images, using the Terminal.
1
Discussion/artworks
To build a collection, we need words: captions, tags, labels, alt-text. But what does it mean to put an image into words, for human vision and for computer vision? We’ll start with a few artworks that engage with this question, then move on to labeling our own set of images.
_Marion Balac, All by myself, 2017.
_Penelope Umbrico, Suns (From Sunsets) from Flickr, 2016.
_Bojana Coklyat and Finnegan Shannon, Alt-text as poetry, ongoing
_Tim Parchikov, I'm not a robot, 2021
_Aram Batholl, Are you human?, 2017
_Trevor Paglen, ImageNet Roulette, 2019
2
Group work
In small groups (three to four people maximum), find labels for your images and discuss what makes them look alike or different. Based on your observations and your discussion, make a list of tags, hastags, captions, alt-text, etc.
3
Terminal tutorial
This introduction to the Terminal is a first step into automation. In the context of this workshop, command lines can help you sort, rename, and reformat the collection of images you have gathered from the internet.
