DAY 03
Movie and production of generic images.
1
Screening
A Truly Shared Love is a tragedy, and capitalism its curse. Emilie Brout & Maxime Marion show their true love story, surrounded by their cat and connected companions in their own domestic environment. Using the codes of commercial imagery of stock videos, they play with the normative and idealized representations of their genre, class and figure of artist as a model of the start-up nation that are usually conveyed there.
2
Pre-production work
Before this afternoon, please read the Shutterstock contributor guidelines carefully. Pay particular attention to what they say about image dimensions and technical quality, composition, light, anonymisation and model or property releases, and copyright issues such as visible logos, brands, artworks, architecture and screens. The point is to understand the rules well enough to work with them. Then come and talk to me. Together we will decide what kind of image you are going to shoot this afternoon, where it will take place, and what equipment you will need.
3
Producing images (first set)
Produce a set of at least five generic versions of the image on your phone. Vary the place, the light and the colours from one image to the next, so that each version tests a different idea of what "generic" means instead of repeating the same shot. Use the guidelines as your technical reference as you go, and keep track of which of your images you think would pass review and which would not.
