LE BLANCHIMENT DES IMAGES
Digital Cultures, Camera Arts, HSLU, Luzern
12.10 - 16.10.2026

This workshop starts from an offline personal image: the kind we carry with us at all times, the kind we secretly catch a glimpse of over someone's shoulder. Guided by this image, students search the internet's vast anonymous archive, and more specifically datasets like ImageNet, tracing the resemblances that quietly bind millions of unrelated pictures together. Out of that search, the personal image is gradually stripped of its particulars, reworked into two series of generic images built to meet the submission guidelines of a stock-image platform such as Shutterstock.

The workshop combines hands-on production, peer feedback, and theoretical grounding in Serge Daney's distinction between image and visuel, alongside a short introduction to automated workflows via the Terminal. It concludes by extracting a single description, a prompt, from the resulting collection: a reflection on what remains of a photograph once its particulars have been washed away, caught between the generic and the generative.
